During the Armageddon 2001 event, the Waverider explored the various timelines of Earth's heroes in an attempt to find the one that would become the cruel Monarch in his time. One such timeline saw Superman leaving the planet after Lois Lane-Kent died while carrying their child. He would encounter Maxima when she saved his life from an accident in space, leading the two to fall in love. A leader of a one of the dissident houses of the Almeracian Empire who was supposed to marry Maxima to bring peace to the Empire only to be spurned for Superman, nearly succeeds in killing the Man of Steel and destroying Earth but is killed himself. In order to prevent his remaining House from finishing what he started, Maxima convences Superman to stay with her on Almerac in order to wage an open war with the rival power and spare Earth completely.
The Waverider decided at the point the Superman would not become Monarch due the events in the timeline and moved on to the next hero. But how did the rest of the timeline develop after the Waverider stopped watching...?

The battle was not going well.
Maxima, ruler of the Almerac Empire, was forced to concede this fact as she watched the Krenon battle-bots rained down on the beachhead her forces had managed to establish. The worst part is that Kal-El had been right, she thought to herself.
For two months now, as her Kryptonian consort-slash-general measured time, the Houses loyal to the Almeracian throne had fought openly fought, for the first time in anyone recent memory, against the Krenons and the two or three distasteful Houses that threw in with the cybernetic beings following a failed attempt to have their leader marry Maxima. During this time it appeared that the Royal Army was pushing the Krenon's further and further back, til finally they had to make a stand at the backwater world of Chimutar II. Maxima had found this development to be the prelude to an out and out victory over her enemies, but Kal had warned that this could have been nothing more then a feint to goad her into sending her entire army to the tiny unimportant world in order to crush her and her forces.
Maxima scoffed at the idea. The Krenon forces fought hard even thought they had been woefully too small to stop the Royal Army. But Kal had countered that it was more then possible that the House of Krenon was simply hiding the true size of their army in order to let Maxima think she was winning and lead her into the no win scenario that he believed Chimutar II was.
And now I see that he was correct and I, nothing more then an overeager fool. she thought grimly.
"My Lady Maxima!" she heard someone call out. Turning she saw Draaga making his way to her. The large and powerful alien had been recruited early in the war by Kal-El to help lead her forces on other fronts and help teach her forces how to fight the underhanded means of the enemy. He wore Kal's S-shield emblem on his tunic and was as fiercely loyal to him as he was to Maxima.
"Report, General Draaga," she said to him as he made his way to her command tent.
Draaga bowed down to one knee and said in his gravelly voice, "My Lady, we must pull back."
Maxima's pride answered before her commonsense did, "Retreat! No, never! I am Maxima, ruler of Almerac and I will fight to the last man and then to my very death if I have to!"
"You may yet see that vow fulfilled," Draaga replied, "The Krenon's forces have wiped out the First through Third Battle-groups. Only the Gold and Blue squadrons remain of the Second."
"And the Fifth Battle-group?"
"Missing, my lady," answered Draaga, "They went down on the other side of the planet and no one can establish communications with them." The massive blueish-gray being stood and took a step closer to her, "The enemy is much stronger then we believed. You charged me to help win this war and Kal-El charged me to keep you safe. In order to do both, I must insist we withdraw, give the Krenon mother-bot this backwater, we still control much of the empire that we secured these past solar-turns."
Maxima thought for a moment and listened to the sounds of the battle around her. The sounds of mortar fire and energy blast chewing up her forces encampments and ships. The sound of her men screaming in agony as the bravely, not to mention blindly fought for her. Most of all, she heard her beloved words in what Draaga was saying. "Very well, General, order the men to fall back as best and quickly as they can. We will regroup at---"
A plasma mortar exploded just outside the command post, effectively destroying it before Maxima could finish the order. The last thought Maxima had before fading into the oblivion of unconsciousness was that she was not going to be able to tell Kal he was right.
The battle did not go well at all.
